for children ages 3-5.
Early Elementary Ballet/Tap Combination

emphasis on technique, musicality, and expression. These classes
are offered
for children ages 5-7.
Ballet Technique
Ballet is a classical
form of dance widely recognized as the foundation for all types of
dance. It is performed in soft ballet shoes, usually beginning with
warm-up steps at the barre before progressing to more complex steps in
the centre floor. The class uses French terminology and appropriate
classical music. There are many specific styles of ballet, and Studio
Dance Centre teaches a blend of several styles, including Cecchetti
(traditional French technique) and Vagonova (traditional Russian
technique). Ballet technique classes are open to children ages 7 and
older, as well as adults.
Tap Technique
Tap is a percussive
form of dance performed in shoes with metal taps, with an emphasis on
fast footwork, coordination, and complex rhythms. The class may use
appropriate music, or be taught a cappella. Styles
of tap range greatly and include "blues" tap, jazz tap, Broadway or
musical theatre tap, and rhythm tap. Tap technique classes are open to
children ages 7 and older, as well as adults.
Jazz Technique
Jazz is a popular form
of dance performed in soft leather shoes, with an emphasis on technique, musicality, and expression. Its styles are often
reflective of specific geographical areas or time periods, such as
Latin or Swing dance styles. Jazz is at different times lyrical,
theatrical, and powerful. Jazz technique classes are open to children
ages 7 and older.

Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a
high-energy urban dance form born in 1970's New York and cultivated by
hip hop music, performed in street clothes and shoes, with a strong emphasis
on rhythm. It
has gained a prominent place in pop culture,
due to the presence of Hip Hop choreography in music videos.
Hip Hop classes are open to children ages 7 and older, as
well as adults.
Modern
Modern is an
expressive and creative form of dance established in the early 20th
century. It is performed in bare feet and showcases new ways of
interpreting or appreciating different kinds of music.
Modern techniques offer dancers the opportunity to
move more freely than other dance styles and to experiment with new
ways of moving the body - all while learning a
new kind of structure and vocabulary. Modern also
often incorporates improvisation and in-class composition. Modern classes are open to children ages 7 and older.
Pointe
Pointework is a highly
disciplined element of advanced ballet performed in special shoes
constructed of many layers of canvas or burlap, satin, and glue, to
allow a dancer to dance on the tips her toes. The result is a nimble
form of ballet, giving the illusion that a dancer is lighter than air.
This class emphasizes many things, including proper muscle use and
weight placement, as well as skill and style. Pointe
classes at Studio Dance Centre are permitted only to serious dancers
with consistent ballet training (taking ballet technique classes at
least twice a week), who demonstrate appropriate ballet
proficiency and dedication.
Pointe Preparation
Pointe Prep classes
are designed to introduce dancers to the elements of dancing en
pointe (above). Emphasis is on correct technique and
strengthening exercises for the feet, legs, and core muscles.
Highlighted in this class are discussions of the proper time for a
dancer to go en pointe, as well as the proper
fitting and fit of pointe shoes. Remember that dancing en
pointe may come at different times for different dancers, and
it is unlikely that a dancer will go en pointe
before the age of 12. Pointe shoes, when worn too early or used
improperly can cause detrimental problems.
